Abt Associates, a global company formed in Cambridge, MA in 1965, wanted to create a work environment where innovation, bold thinking and creativity could tackle the toughest social issues of the day. Fifty-three years later, Abt’s mission is still to improve the quality of life and economic well-being of people worldwide.

With more than 2,300 employees in offices around the world, Abt decided to embark on two major relocation projects within their real estate portfolio due to lease terminations. One was a 154,000sf project at 6130 Executive Plaza in Rockville, MD and the other a 93,000sf at 10 Fawcett Street in Cambridge, MA.

What was unique about these projects is that they were designed and constructed at the same time. Both projects finished on time and exactly one week apart.

After reviewing proposals, touring showrooms and interviewing furniture dealerships, Officeworks was selected to design, produce 3-D renderings, select multiple finishes, procure, install and project manage. We were selected based on our project team’s experience, design capabilities and product offerings.

After collaborating with design firms, IA and Officeworks, Abt decided to do away with a heavy private office environment and create an open floor concept. They eliminated all private offices and encouraged team collaboration by creating a space with open workstations, huddle rooms, and team areas.

A major challenge was selecting and ordering furniture for 12 floors that were installed at the same time. This is where Officeworks excels. With a team of talented professionals, we were able to design, order and install all product in just 12 weeks.

With collaboration between Abt Associates, IA, JLL project management, Teknion, Chapman Construction in MA and Rand*Construction in MD Officeworks exceeded the client expectations and both spaces were a success!!
